Join Yames Saturday March 23rd for an afternoon workshop learning the basics of surface gilding gold leaf.
Surface gilding is the application of gold leaf to objects, predominantly used on vehicles, signs, and decorative architectural elements. We see it used for address numbers on houses, lettering on fire trucks and the domed roof of the historic Buffalo Savings Bank. No prior knowledge is necessary to attend! This workshop covers all the steps you will need in order to start your surface gilding journey.

Surface Gilding Workshop Outline
Workshop participants will learn the process of surface gilding over the course of an afternoon. Participants will have a selection of traditional fonts to choose from and then learn how to reproduce the letter on their panel in gold leaf and enamel paint.

Meet & mingle – participants arrive & get settled into their workspaces
12:00 — 12:15 pm
Workshop overview & initial instructions
12:15 — 12:45 pm
Application of oil size: oil size is the adhesive which bonds gold leaf to a surface. Students will learn the process of brushing on oil size to create their letterform.
12:45 — 1:15 pm
While the oil size sets, participants will have the chance to map out their panel colors if they haven’t done so already & mix their paint colors
1:15 — 1:30 pm
Participants will apply gold leaf to their panels & learn burnishing techniques
1:30 — 2:00 pm
Burnish panels & patch any holidays
2:00 — 4:00 pm
Paint in the outline, block, background & shadow of the letterform
